Dream journaling and reflecting on dreams for greater self-awareness

Dream Journal – What Can Our Dreams Teach Us About Ourselves?

Why I Started Keeping a Dream Journal

For the past several months, I have been keeping a dream journal.

🇸🇪 Drömdagbok – vad kan våra drömmar lära oss om oss själva?

Not because I believe every dream has a hidden answer or can predict the future, but because dreams sometimes help me understand feelings I haven’t yet found words for while I’m awake.

A single dream can seem strange or confusing. But when I read several dreams over time, I begin to notice patterns. The same themes return, even though the stories are different.

For me, my dream journal has become a way of working with myself. Not to find the ”right” interpretation, but to ask questions.

What feeling was the strongest?

What stayed with me after I woke up?

Is there something in my waking life that this dream reflects?

I don’t believe dreams tell us what will happen.

But I do believe they sometimes tell us something about what is already happening within us.

Perhaps that is why they are worth listening to.

A Racing Heart-Dream Journal

Last night I woke up with my heart pounding.

I dreamed I was in a cold place with a stone floor. People were lying close together. At first, I thought they were dead, but then I realized they were alive. They simply didn’t move. Their faces were pale, almost like painted death masks.

Around them sat people dressed in black, completely still.

Somehow I knew I had to leave.

One of the black-clothed figures approached me with a syringe. I tried to protect myself with my hands. Then the person said something that still echoes in my mind:

”I already knew how you would defend yourself. That’s why I brought another syringe.”

At that moment, I woke up.

Was There Something to Learn?

At first, I thought the dream was about a fear of death.

But the more I reflected on it, the more I realized that wasn’t what frightened me the most.

What frightened me was the thought of becoming like the people lying on the floor.

Alive – but not truly living.

Existing, but disconnected from life.

It made me think about how easy it is to get caught in everyday routines. To do everything that is expected of us while slowly losing touch with ourselves.

Dream Journal-Standing Alone

In my dream, I tried to wake Tommy, but he slept so deeply that I couldn’t reach him. I felt both panic and frustration at having to face everything alone.

Perhaps that part wasn’t really about Tommy.

Perhaps it was about those moments in life when we realize that some journeys have to be taken on our own. Others can walk beside us, but they cannot walk them for us.

When I look back through my dream journal, I notice the same themes returning again and again.

I run.

I protect.

I fight.

I don’t give up.

Maybe that is what I was meant to take with me from this dream.

Not that the world is dangerous.

Not that something terrible is about to happen.

But that the part of me that wants to live refuses to give up.

Perhaps that is why I woke up before I became one of those lying on the floor.

Between the Lines -Dream Journal

Sometimes our nightmares are not warnings about the future.

Perhaps they are reminders not to forget to live.

To keep feeling.

To keep choosing what gives life meaning.

There is a great difference between surviving and truly living.

I am not afraid of dying.

I simply hope I have enough time to truly live.

Maybe we are never completely finished.

Maybe life isn’t about reaching the end, but about continuing to take one more step.

To keep giving.

To keep loving.

To keep putting life’s little pieces back where they belong.

Every step may not make us complete.

But every step can make us a little more whole.

I hope that when my life comes to an end, the people around me won’t be left carrying guilt or wondering about all the things that were never said.

I hope they will feel that we had our time.

That we asked for forgiveness when we needed to.

That we said ”I love you.”

That we did our best.

That life can continue, even without me.

Not because I was unimportant.

But because love has never been about holding on.

It has always been about passing something good on to others.

What Does Research Say?

When I first started keeping a dream journal, I naturally wondered whether there was any research about dreams.

There is.

However, there is no scientific evidence that a specific dream symbol always has the same meaning. Dreaming about water, houses, or syringes does not carry one universal interpretation.

Modern research suggests that dreams often reflect our emotions, memories, relationships, and daily experiences. During REM sleep, the brain processes events and feelings that have not yet fully settled.

That is why dreams can become meaningful—not because they predict the future, but because they sometimes reveal something about how we are feeling right now.

How I Work With My Dreams

In my dream journal, I don’t try to interpret one dream in isolation.

Instead, I look for changes over time.

As the months pass, I begin to notice patterns.

Some emotions become quieter.

Others become stronger.

Some themes return again and again.

I write down my dreams as soon as I wake up.

Then I ask myself:

What was I really feeling?

What frightened me?

What gave me hope?

Does this feeling exist somewhere in my waking life?

Months later, I read them again.

Have the dreams changed?

Have I changed?

Some symbols have stayed with me for a long time—children, rooms, doors, and boundaries.

This time, the dream reminded me that some parts of life are mine to face on my own.

I don’t know if dreams change me.

But I do believe they help me notice the changes that are already happening within me.

That is why I continue keeping a dream journal.

Not to find perfect answers.

But to keep learning who I am.

🌿 Questions for You

Have you ever woken up from a dream that stayed with you all day?

Have you noticed certain themes returning in your dreams?

Do you keep a dream journal, or do your dreams disappear as quickly as you wake up?

If you look back one year, have your dreams changed in the same way that you have changed?

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
