Home life, cooking joy and stargazing – this Sunday smelled like freshly baked cake, although it was a little deceiving… In truth, it was my homemade muesli that spread that warm scent. The morning was filled with vinegar, cabbage and cooking joy, giving the house a feeling of both everyday luxury and stillness.

Home life, cooking joy and stargazing – August evening on the terrace
Hello, and welcome to my little blog corner. It’s always a pleasure when you stop by and have a look. We had planned to visit our youngest son in Gothenburg, but since we were both feeling a bit under the weather, we decided to stay home. He’s heading to Greece on vacation, and of course, it wouldn’t be wise for us to bring along something that could ruin his trip.
Vänersborg Instead of Gothenburg
Instead, we took a drive to Vänersborg for some grocery shopping since both the fridge and freezer needed refilling. The cat also needed her special food, which we can only find in Vänersborg – conveniently next to the store we usually visit. Unfortunately, the shop was closed when we arrived, so we had to return home without the cat food. That means I’ll make another trip there later this week, which might be good anyway since I’m planning to buy some treats for my colleagues before an upcoming meeting.
A Final Farewell to Dear Colleagues
One last goodbye before I leave work. This brought so many thoughts and emotions at once – what will life be like after this? At that moment, feelings came rushing in. I will miss my colleagues deeply, not only them but also all the people around us – and of course, the young people I’ve had the honor of meeting. It’s not without a little ache in both heart and mind. On our ward, I have the best coworkers anyone could ask for.
Back Home – Kitchen Flow and Everyday Luxury
Back home, I found myself in a wonderful cooking flow. First came the pizza salad, made exactly as I learned over 30 years ago at a pizzeria. Then came my homemade muesli, prepared in my own way. Finally, I made a Turkish red cabbage salad. The scent of baking spread through the house, and the afternoon breeze on the terrace became my reward. The evening held its own tradition – what we always do at this time of year.

When the Weather Allows – Stargazing in the Middle of Home Life
The weather is mild and summer nights offer a clear sky, we can’t resist making a bed outside. When it’s ready, we lie down and watch the falling stars light up the night. Right now, the Perseids meteor shower is at its peak – one of the year’s most spectacular. In clear skies, you can see 50–100 meteors an hour, though the moonlight this year might make them a little harder to spot.

We count the stars, see which “fall” and which fade away. It feels like a silent concert, the sky performing its own fireworks. We might not have seen many meteors, but it gave us a moment to simply be there. The bed remains outside, so we might just do it again tonight.

Neighbor’s Films for Young Explorers
In the middle of it all, I took a break to check out my neighbor’s YouTube channel. She creates short educational videos for children about nature, animals and all sorts of fascinating things. Often simple, warm and pedagogical, they’re perfect for little explorers. Sometimes the videos include questions for the children to answer, followed by cheers when they get it right.

Recipes
Pizza Salad – Just Like at the Pizzeria, Only Better at Home

Finely shred white cabbage (summer cabbage if you can – sweeter and softer). Today, I skipped the bell pepper and added some red cabbage for color and crunch. Mix with olive oil, salt, black pepper, finely chopped onion, red wine vinegar, water and pressed garlic. Finally, season with oregano and basil.
Tip: For the original pizzeria version, add sliced bell pepper – mild sweetness and beautiful color.
My Homemade Muesli – Gluten-Free, Flavorful and Sugar-Free

Oats, coconut, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, nuts, pumpkin seeds, a little roasted almond and raisins. Mix all ingredients, roast in the oven at 220°C (428°F) for 15 minutes, stir, then continue roasting in short intervals until golden. Let cool and mix with cornflakes if desired.
Turkish Red Cabbage Salad – Fresh and Flavorful

Shred red cabbage and knead with salt for at least a minute until it releases water. Season with lemon, olive oil and white wine vinegar. Massage in the dressing well and let sit for at least an hour before serving.
Reflection
We had planned for motorhome adventures this weekend, but instead, it became a day of cozy home life and cooking. Even when plans change, they can still lead to something good. Maybe it’s in the unexpected that peace lives. So don’t be afraid to change course. Pause, feel, and enjoy the freedom of not planning every detail.
