Preface

This is one of those stories that lives in both the heart and the body. A story about wind, mountains, wonder – and how a book recommendation turned into a deep love for the nature of Norway. I’m writing this with the mountains outside the window and the wind just beginning to calm down. Perhaps you’ll feel a sense of stillness between the lines.

The Books That Opened the Door to the Mountains

A few years ago – maybe it was in 2019 – I developed a deep fondness for Norway and its majestic mountains. It started when I read a book series about Bøverdalen and two sisters. The books take place in the area around Sognefjellet, Skjolden, and Luster. They’re set 200 years ago and tell the story of how people adapted to the harsh, beautiful mountain life and weather.

Since then, we’ve spent several summers traveling to Norway to experience these landscapes in real life.

When the Wind Shows Its Power

Yesterday, even though it’s midsummer, we experienced just how powerful the weather can be up here in the mountains. Gusts of wind rocked our motorhome so much it felt like it might lift off the ground. The whole vehicle shook, and the curtains moved—even though all the windows and doors were shut. It was both thrilling and a bit scary. I’m thankful it’s summer and not winter.

Did you know?
In the Norwegian mountains, weather can change quickly—regardless of the season. Summer storms are common, and wind speeds can go from calm to gale force in minutes. This is why it’s important to always be prepared when camping or hiking. Temperatures can also drop suddenly, even in July.

Stillness at Otta Seatacamping

We’re currently at Otta Seatacamping, with our motorhome parked right by the water. Across the river, the mountains rise so steeply that the houses on the other side look like something from a miniature world. Now and then a train rushes by, looking like a toy.

But it’s all real. The houses are full-sized, the trains real – it’s just the dramatic scale of the landscape that makes everything else feel tiny.

How the Mountains Affect Me

I don’t quite know what it is, but something shifts in me when I’m here among the mountains. A different rhythm settles in my body. I breathe slower. Move slower. The outside pace doesn’t matter anymore.

We’ve been here before, but I never grow tired of it. Every time we return, I stop and take it in. Every time, I notice something new. And each time, I’m filled with awe – at just how vast and beautiful this world can be.

Today’s Destination: Dovrefjell

Today we’re heading up into Dovrefjell. We’re skipping breakfast here and plan to eat up there in the mountains instead. Who knows – maybe we’ll spot a musk ox!

After that, we’re continuing toward Gäddede to experience the northern Swedish mountains before heading home. But honestly – after everything we’ve seen here, it will be hard for anything to top this.

Norway – Our “Little Brother” with a Big Heart

We Swedes sometimes jokingly refer to Norway as our little brother, but when it comes to nature and mountains, the roles are reversed. Norway always delivers more. Bigger. Wilder. And always with something new to discover – if you take the time to look.

Final Words

Thank you for visiting my blog and reading my thoughts today. Maybe you’ve been to the Norwegian mountains yourself – or maybe you’re now dreaming of going. Either way, I hope this little glimpse into my world brought you a sense of calm and wonder.

* Facts About Mountain Weather – English

The weather in the mountains is known for being unpredictable and changing rapidly. Even in the middle of summer, temperatures can drop quickly, and snow or hail can occur. Wind speeds can increase within minutes, turning a sunny day into a serious challenge for hikers or campers.

In areas like Dovrefjell and Sognefjellet, strong winds, dense fog, and sudden weather shifts are common. It is highly recommended to always bring warm clothing, rain protection, and extra food and water – no matter the season.

Mountain weather demands respect, planning, and attentiveness – but the reward is a breathtaking and powerful experience of nature.
