School graduation and summer holidays belong together for me. Today it was finally time to put a long school year behind us. When the church bells fell silent, the songs had been sung, and the children ran out into summer, I felt my shoulders relax and my breathing become calmer.

School Graduation and Summer Holidays
Today was school graduation day.
No more schedules to keep, alarm clocks to answer, or mornings that have to work perfectly.
Here at home, we celebrated with two tubs of ice cream, freshly grilled chicken that our older son brought home from work, and potato salad.
To me, that tastes like summer.
Ice cream with strawberries and blueberries, made in our Ninja ice cream machine, tastes like summer too.
When the church service was over, I received a text message saying that a little boy’s mother was in the hospital and that he would be home alone.
Instead, he came here.
So today we played Uno.
Just like Alfred, he finds it a little difficult to lose and sometimes even a little difficult to win with style. Cheating is probably a special skill that most children have when it comes to winning games.
School graduations are special.
I stood at the back of the church and watched this year sail by together with the songs.
Slowly, my shoulders relaxed.
My breathing softened.
Calmer.
Now it’s summer holiday.
No one needs to keep track of schedules.
Now we can simply be free.
Swim.
Play games.
Eat ice cream.
Barbecue.
And do all those summer things that make life feel a little softer and a little easier.
It has been a long school year.
Now summer is here.
And it feels really good.
Reflection – School Graduation and Summer Holidays
Sometimes school graduations are not about grades, songs, or flowers for the teachers.
Sometimes they are about relief.
About letting go of a school year that has been heavy. About breathing out and realizing that you made it through another year.
As I stood at the back of the church listening to the songs, I felt my shoulders relax. Not because every question had been answered, but because summer was finally waiting just outside the door.
Maybe that is what summer is for many of us.
A pause.
A chance to catch our breath.
An opportunity to simply be human for a while.
Between the Lines – School Graduation and Summer Holidays
Between the lines of this text there is not only joy about summer holidays.
There is also care.
Care for children who need a safe place to be.
Care for the little boy who did not have to sit alone at home.
Care for a family gathering around chicken, ice cream, and a game of Uno.
There is something else too.
A tiredness that is finally allowed to rest.
When I describe my shoulders relaxing in the church, it is not only about the school graduation. It is about an entire school year being set aside for a little while.
And maybe that is why summer feels so important.
Not because life suddenly becomes perfect.
But because we are given the chance to breathe between chapters.
This is a post that reminds us that happiness rarely consists of big things.
It consists of freshly grilled chicken.
Strawberry ice cream.
Children who cheat at Uno.
People finding room for each other around the same table.
And the feeling of realizing that you do not have to keep track of a single schedule tomorrow.
A Question for You
What does summer holiday mean to you?
Is it the freedom from schedules and obligations, or is there a special summer tradition that makes you feel that summer has finally arrived?
