🌭 Mellerud in Sweden – small moments, quiet places and what stays

Mellerud in Sweden is perhaps not a place people talk about the most.
But it is a place that stays with you.

Not because something big happens.
But because it doesn’t need to.

📍 How it all began

Mellerud didn’t become a town because someone decided it should be.

It grew.

Here, by Lake Vänern, people have lived for a long time.
Close to the land, the forest and the water.

But what made the place grow was the railway in the 19th century.
When the tracks were built, Mellerud became a place where people met.

Where goods passed through.
Where life kept moving.

🧑‍🌾 Life here in the past

In the past, life wasn’t about keeping up.

It was about making things work.

People worked with:

– farming
– forestry
– crafts
– what was close at hand

It was a life that required effort,
but it also held something else.

A rhythm.

🌿 My feeling

Maybe that’s why Mellerud feels the way it does today.

Not built to impress.
But built to function.

And maybe that’s why it settles so quietly within you.

📍 A small place close to everything

Mellerud is located in Dalsland, close to Lake Vänern – the largest lake in Sweden.
About 9,000 people live in the municipality.

It’s not a big place.
And maybe that’s exactly why something else exists here.

A closeness.

To nature.
To calmness.
To a life that doesn’t rush.

🏰 Dalaborg – a ruin that still carries history

Not far from Mellerud lies Dalaborg.

A castle ruin.
But not just any ruin.

Dalaborg was built in 1304 by the dukes Erik and Valdemar.

It was strategically placed by Lake Vänern and became an important location for power and control in the region.

Here, noblemen gathered.
Here, battles took place.
And here, Queen Margaret was recognized as ruler of Sweden in 1388.

But the castle did not remain.

In 1434, it was destroyed during the Engelbrekt rebellion.

Today, it is a ruin.

But not an empty one.

There is something there.
You can feel it when you visit.

🌊 A quiet that doesn’t need explaining

When we were here, the ice still lingered in places.
Spring hadn’t quite decided yet.

It was cold.
A bit grey.
But still beautiful.

It’s the kind of place where you don’t need to do much.
And yet, something still happens.

🚐 Vita Sannar – camping by Lake Vänern

In Mellerud, you’ll also find Vita Sannar, a campsite right by Lake Vänern.

A place many people are drawn to,
and it’s easy to understand why.

Here you find:

– closeness to the water
– bright sandy shores
– open spaces
– and that feeling of summer

The campsite has been around for a long time and is well known in the area.
It is well-organized, beautiful, and located in a way that truly brings you close to nature.

But…

for me, it almost becomes a bit too organized.

A bit too arranged.
A bit too “perfect”.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.
It’s just not exactly what I’m looking for.

And yet…

we still go there once or a few times every year.

Because there are things for children and teenagers.
There is a pool.
There is life.

And even though I personally prefer swimming in Lake Vänern,
the children want the pool.

And then it becomes a place that works anyway.

And it’s close.

About an hour from home.
Close enough to just go there spontaneously.

Just like that…
to spend a little time living the motorhome life.

And that is worth a lot too.

🌿

Maybe it’s not always about what I prefer,
but about what works for all of us together.

🌭 Sausage, mashed potatoes and a small misunderstanding

And then there’s a story that has stayed with us.

Not from this visit,
but from a long time ago, when my husband was working in the area, changing electricity meters.

He stopped to eat.
Sausage and mashed potatoes – simple, as it usually is.

But when he ordered, he was told that the mashed potatoes were “jämt finished”.

And that’s where it got a bit… wrong.

Because here in Mellerud, “jämt” can mean “just now” or “recently”.

But where we come from, it means “always”.

So what my husband heard was:
“The mashed potatoes are always finished.”

And he thought:
“Well… then why is it even on the menu?”

It became one of those moments that stays with you.
Where a single word shifts everything.

😄 “Tough times in Mellerud”

And then there’s that expression:

“Hårda bud i Mellerud” (roughly: “tough times in Mellerud”).

You’ve heard it.
Maybe even said it yourself.

There’s no clear explanation of where it comes from.
But it has stayed.

Maybe because it sounds so firm.
So direct.

And maybe it fits, in a way.

Not harsh –
but honest.

Like life sometimes is.

🌿 A place just to be

Mellerud is not a place you go to in order to keep up.

But it has what you need.

A small town center with shops.
A shopping area.
And the large store Bloms – a bit like a smaller version of Ullared.

There’s also an indoor swimming pool.

It’s not big.
But it’s cozy.

And still…

that’s not why you go there.

You go there to slow down.

To take a walk.
To sit still.
To be close to something that doesn’t demand much.

🌿 Reflection

It’s not always the big things that stay.

Sometimes it’s:

A small place.
An old ruin.
A misunderstanding over sausage and mashed potatoes.
A word that meant something else than you thought.

And that’s enough.

💬 Your Voice: Between the Lines

What this is really about…

is how much can fit into something small.

A place.
A moment.
A word.

And still…

so much life.
