Preface – a small impulse that became something more
Sometimes it starts so simply.
An email. A thought. A “oh, I would really like that”.
And then… it becomes something more.

🍦 The ice cream maker, a power outage and life happening
Today I got an email from Elgiganten about an ice cream maker at home – and I don’t usually even look, because I don’t need anything.
But today I did.
And there it was.
On sale.
An ice cream maker.
I looked at it and felt it right away:
simple… you just put things in and it does the rest…
You know how thoughts start spinning.
And I started thinking that maybe an ice cream maker at home isn’t such a bad idea after all.
🍦 When ice cream isn’t really ice cream anymore
Ice cream has become something else today when you buy it in stores.
I can’t help but stop when I read the ingredients.
Chickpeas… sorghum… different flours…
That’s not really what you think of when you think of ice cream.
But I understand it.
A lot of these ice creams are made without milk and cream.
And then you have to replace that creaminess with something else.
So instead of the “usual”, they contain plant milk, starch and things that hold it together.
It’s probably smart.
But it’s also… unfamiliar.
And not something I really like.
With an ice cream maker at home, you can actually choose for yourself what goes into it.
🍳 A thought that followed me
I didn’t think more about it.
I sent the link to my husband and just wrote:
“Oh, I would like one of those.”
And then I let it go.
I thought that when we go into town to buy that frying pan we’ve been looking for, I could take another look at it.
I honestly thought he would say:
“But how often do you use the one you already have?”
But he didn’t say anything.
🌸 Orchids, everyday life and time running
At home I was fixing my orchids.
I had seen that you can keep them only in water.
I thought – I’ll try with one.
But standing there… it looked so beautiful.
And suddenly all of them were standing in bowls with water.
And suddenly the time had passed, and it was time to pick up Alfred.
Into the car.
Pick him up.
A little play in the car on the way home.
And then home – putting the potatoes on that I had already peeled.
🎁 “Look – congratulations”
🍦 Ice cream maker at home – a small thought that became something more
And then my husband came home.
“Now grandpa is coming”, I said to Alfred.
He is always so happy when he comes home.
My husband walks in and says:
“Look – congratulations.”
And there it was.
A big package.
The ice cream maker.
The one I had only mentioned in passing.
Alfred was so excited.
I was so excited.

⚡ And then the power went out
And then… the power went out.
The potatoes stopped cooking.
Everything paused.
But instead, we got time.
Time to read the instructions –
in English, French and other languages… but not Swedish.
Our oldest son at home, the one who loves instructions, helped us.
I googled recipes.
My husband looked through the freezer.
And instead of meatballs, he went outside and grilled.
🏡 Life continues anyway
We ate.
Then Alfred and I played chess.
I have never played before.
And Alfred won.
But he said:
“You were good grandma, it took me a long time to win.”
And he took the chess game home with him.
And that was enough.
Alfred went home.
The power came back.
We went to the pharmacy – and the queue system didn’t work because of the outage.
A lot of people.
It took time.
🍦 Ice cream maker at home – back to the simple
But once back home…
I started.
Whipping cream.
Boiling milk with vanilla.
Filling the small containers with the ice cream mixture.
Putting them in the freezer.
And tomorrow…
We will try.
There is something special about standing there with an ice cream maker at home and making everything from scratch.
🍦 Recipe – my first ice cream in an ice cream maker at home
I started by boiling 1 dl milk with a vanilla bean, letting the flavor really come out. While that was heating, I whipped 3 dl cream together with 1 dl sugar until it became soft and fluffy. When the milk was ready, I scraped out the vanilla bean and mixed it into the cream, added another 3 dl milk and stirred everything together into a smooth mixture.
Then I poured it into the small containers and placed them in the freezer – ready for tomorrow’s first try in my ice cream maker at home.
🥄 Ingredients
- 1 dl milk
- 1 vanilla bean
- 3 dl whipping cream
- 1 dl sugar
- 3 dl milk
👩🍳 How to
- Boil 1 dl milk with the vanilla bean
- Whip cream and sugar
- Scrape vanilla into the cream
- Add remaining milk and mix
- Freeze at least 12–24 hours
- Then run it in your ice cream maker at home
💌 A small message – and a new idea
Later that evening, I got a message from a boy who used to live here a long time ago.
He told me to surprise my husband with his favorite.
I won’t write what it is here – then it wouldn’t be a surprise.
But he is right.
I can feel it already.
This will work.
My husband will love that ice cream.
He even said he might come by this weekend.
And Simon and his partner are coming too – for grilled food.
💭 Reflection
It’s strange how life works.
You think you’re just going to buy a machine.
And instead you get a day filled with so much more.
Interruptions.
Moments.
Memories.
And maybe that’s what life really is.
Not what we plan –
but what happens while we are planning.
✨ Between the lines – ice cream maker at home
I’m not longing for things.
I’m longing for the feeling.
To create something from scratch.
To gather people around a table.
To give – and receive.
The ice cream maker was just the beginning.
❓ A question for you
What is the last thing you “just looked at”…
that turned into something more?
